It is used not only as a core material for many incense mixtures, but also for its fragrance and excellent insect repellency, and is widely used for Buddhist statues, art sculptures, fans, prayer beads, etc. It is said to have been added to the Shosoin treasures.

It is said that it takes 30 years for good quality sandalwood to grow, and sandalwood from Mysore (southern part of India) is considered to be the highest quality and is called Laoshan sandalwood.

良質の白檀が育つまでには30年はかかると言われており、インドのマイソール(南部)産の白檀が最上級とされ、老山白檀とよばれています。
