Fragrance Day

How are you doing?

What day is it today?
There's an anniversary every day.

Personally, I think there are some anniversaries that are just commercials (lol), but considering that in China and Japan, time is divided into detailed periods such as the 24 solar terms and 72 divisions of the year, and each day is valued, it is probably okay to celebrate something every day.

By the way, as of today, January 11th, as I write this, there are 13 commemorative days in total, including Kagami-biraki (opening of sake barrel) and Asparagus Biscuit Day.

The world-famous International Fragrance Day, which is also a day for fragrance, falls on March 21st, the vernal equinox, but what about in Japan?

There are so many fragrance-related anniversaries. Let's take a look at the origins of each one.

April 18th Incense Day

Incense Incense Day

Established in 1992 by the National Council of Incense and Incense Manufacturers.
The origin of this day is from the oldest record of incense in Japan, the "Nihon Shoki," which states that "in April 595, aloeswood washed ashore on Awaji Island." In addition, the character "incense" contains the hidden character "118th day." Therefore, April 18th was designated "Incense Day."

July 7th Fragrance Day

It was established in 1991 by the Chubu Block of the National Federation of Cosmetics Retail Cooperative Associations.
It was suggested to "buy cosmetics and give them as gifts" in honor of Tanabata Day as a sales promotion.

July 24th Sports Aroma Day

Established by the Japan Sports Aromatherapy Trainers Association (JSTA), a non-profit organization.
The reason this day was chosen is because the sports festival "Tokyo Olympics" was scheduled to open on this day in 2020. The purpose is to spread awareness of the importance of sports care and injury prevention among children who play sports, athletes, and sports enthusiasts through sports aroma massage.

October 1st Perfume Day

Perfume Perfume Day Perfume Perfume DayPerfume Day of Perfume

Sephora AAP Japan, which had a presence in Japan for a while, established the award in 2000, and the Japan Fragrance Association established it in 2010.

The date comes from the fact that new perfumes are released around October 1st every year. Also, autumn is the fashion season, and interest in perfumes increases along with new autumn and winter clothes. The aim is to spread the appeal of perfume, which enriches people's emotions, and to liven up the perfume market from Christmas to the end of the year.

October 30th Fragrance Day

Established by Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The background to this establishment date is that the 7th National Cultural Festival "World Fragrance Fair in Noto" was held in Nanao City on October 30, 1992. As a city that advocates the culture of fragrance, it is said that they hold a national competition for fragrance goods and develop products that utilize fragrance.
Nanao City is located in the northern part of Ishikawa Prefecture, in the center of the Noto Peninsula. The name "Nanao" is said to come from the seven ridges (Matsuo, Takeo, Umeo, Tsuruo (Kikuo), Kameo, Ryuo, and Torao) of the mountain (commonly known as Shiroyama) where Nanao Castle, the largest mountain castle in Japan, was located.

November 3rd Aroma Day

Aroma Aroma Day

Established by the Japan Aroma Environment Association, a public interest incorporated association.
"Aromatherapy" is a culture of aroma that was born and developed in Europe. With the aim of recognizing and appreciating the benefits of natural aromas and establishing them as part of Japanese culture, the national holiday "Culture Day " was designated as an anniversary of this day. In addition, the week from this day was designated as "Aroma Week," and aroma-related events are being held all over Japan.

November 5th Incense Culture Day

Established by the Aichi Prefecture Incense and Incense Merchants Association, the day aims to promote incense sticks, sachets, kneaded incense, fragrant wood, and other incense products and the culture surrounding them, and is a pun on the word "iiokou" (good incense).

Bridge and Blend will debut on Incense Day in 2021. We will launch the Anniversary Box project on the same day in 2022. We hope that Incense Day will be recognized not only in Japan but also globally.
