Incense ingredients
How are you doing?
There are many ingredients used in incense. Most of them are familiar spices or herbal medicines. Recently, incense with a perfumed flavor has been produced using essential oils used in aromatherapy, and cypress and cedar, which were not used in traditional incense, are also being used.
What fragrance ingredients are used in Bridge and Blend's "Six in Sense" incense blend, which allows you to experience the world of The Tale of Genji?
The following ten types of fragrance ingredients are used, based on the various fragrances in the "Mukusa no Takimono" (Six Kinds of Incense), which represent the sensibilities of people in the Heian period.
- Agarwood
- Sandalwood
- Shell fragrance
- Borneolum
- Clove
- Frankincense
- Kansho (Japanese pine)
- Cuckoo
- Benzoin
- Turmeric
In the two other incense classes I took, we studied 22 and 30 different fragrance ingredients respectively.
Of course, synthetic fragrances did not exist in the Heian period, so they followed the example of the time and used premium-grade natural fragrances. However, even if it is the same fragrance, the scent must have changed over the course of 1,000 years. This is also the work of nature.
The Heian people created six different fragrances using just ten different scent ingredients, each containing different amounts of different scent ingredients.
When you consider that out of 3,000 different fragrances, even Hermes' former perfumers only used 250 of them to create perfume, it's amazing the creativity of the people at that time!
What they all have in common is that they are fragrances that make generous use of agarwood, the world's most precious fragrance ingredient .
In Bridge and Blend's Incense Creation Workshop , participants will create one of six fragrances using the fragrance ingredients mentioned above.
