STORY

History unfolds.

Now you can experience 1000-year-old blends.

Incense materials drifted to Japan in ancient times, sublimated as Japanese scent, now departs to the world.

Transcend time and space through the scent to 1000 years ago in Japan.

 NATURE FROM AWAJI ISLAND

It is truly a re-discovery of the SCENT of JAPAN - bridging tradition and modern by blending 1000 years’ gap -

In 2018 when the founder Hiro returned to Japan after living overseas for 15+ years, a question “what is Japanese scent?” troubled her. A journey in search of the SCENT of JAPAN has begun!

This project idea came when she was re-reading the Tale of Genji, and discovered it is probably the oldest scent formulation in the record. At the time, Hiro couldn’t help but wonder what it smelled like 1000 years ago.

Imagine if you have a time machine… Let's take a “sniff” of Japan 1000 years ago!

Incense design

Our incense is blended based on the 1000-year-old recipes and hand-made by an incense master based in the Awaji Island where approximately 70% of incense in Japan is produced, with premium grade 100% natural ingredients imported from around the world by our trusted supply partner.

Package design

Our portable "fit-in-your-hand" package is made of durable steel can for re-usable and re-cyclable from head to toe. The lid is used as incense vessel, with our metal incense dish as an incense stand designed to burn incense thoroughly from top to bottom, and the container can store re-fillable incense of 20 pcs.

Our white package suggests that you draw your own sense of smell because your olfactory is unique, individual and personal.

Our color coded label and card inspired from each incense name and using a traditional color palette, expressing each incense image with gradient just like the smoke's changing intensity and density.

And... hand-packed by us with ❤️ in Tokyo.

Introducing “OUR SIX INCENSE”

You can pick your selection(s) from SIX scents or all SIX as your reward.

Project Background

The story of this project goes...

One day via email, "when are you going to start your own brand?"

In many years in the fragrance industry, and since 2015 we have been offering creative incense workshop in several countries. One day near future...

We wanted our first branded product to own a unique concept that no one but us has envisaged - "SCENT of JAPAN" with incense. This is how our incense project started.

At that very moment when we conceptualized this project, COVID-19 has forced many of us to spend more time at home and challenged us to manage to stay home comfortably. The demand for aromatic oils and candles has increased, and incense has been attracting attention worldwide. In fact, the New York Times also wrote several articles featuring incense in 2020.

Historically, incense has been closely connected to religion and prayer all over the world, and I hope that the status of incense as a home fragrance will be established in today's society.

During the Heian (794 - 1185) period in Japan when the elegant culture was established, incense was often used as a home fragrance to scent the living space, despite the strong connection with Buddhism in Japanese history. For this reason, we carefully chose six scents including ones that appear in the Tale of Genji, to develop as our first collection of our own branded products.

About Brand and Company

Premium Incense Inspired by Blending 1000-year-old is the first collection of the brand, Bridge and Blend operated by the company, Project Felicia founded in New York in 2013 as a platform to explore the true potential of scent. At the time, the founder had experienced weakening of her sense of smell due to excessive stress and learned that fragrance eases our lives. She and the company traveled to Singapore and are now based in Tokyo.

The brand Bridge and Blend was born under the philosophy "A Scent World, that creates A Better Society". The founder of the operating company Project Felicia envisions a better world by connecting diverse cultures through scent and creating new value "innovation".

Felicia of Project Felicia is derived from the Latin "Felix (happiness)",  and the plural form, Felicia literally means "happy things". Thus, Project Felicia engages in "projects that deliver happiness".

1% of your contribution will be going doing good

We are delighted to announce that we are now a member of "1% for the Planet" under our operating company "Project Felicia". This organization was founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, an alliance of companies that understand the need to protect the natural environment. For this purpose, we are donating 1% of our revenue to the protection of the natural environment.

Our incense in this project are developed by 100% natural resources borrowed from the nature, and we are extremely honored to have this opportunity.

Let’s celebrate Nature’s Blessings!

Greetings from Project Leader

Hello! I am Hiro, the team leader of this project, “Premium Incense Inspired by Blending 1000-year-old.” I have been serving the community as a Scent Communicator and founded Project Felicia in New York in 2013 as a platform to explore the true potential of scent.

When having weakened my sense of smell and learned that fragrance eases our lives in 2008, I discovered olfactory fascinating and I wanted to share this powerful sense of ours with the rest of the world by working in the fragrance industry. Freelancing, contracting, part-timing in New York until having landed a position at the No.1 fragrance house Givaudan's Singapore office.

As for incense, my first encounter was at my mother’s passing 6 years ago when I was living in Singapore. I noticed the scent that our monk burned during his chant for my mother was different every time he visited my father’s house. And I asked. We continued our incense conversation for a longer time than the chant took. Starting my research on incense and discovered that we can create our own incense. Flying from Singapore to Japan to join a workshop, I wanted to share it with the rest of the world. AGAIN.  Thus I started the “Creative Incense workshop” in 2015.

The rest as you read above. Continued research on “SCENT of JAPAN” and "incense", finally discovered its intersection during re-reading the Tale of Genji.

We hope you are as excited as we are about reviving 1000-year-old blends of incense. Together we’ll bring this project to life.

Hello from Team Felicia

Where we are >>> where we want to go

We’re ready to light these incense! We have all our materials determined, logistics figured out, and suppliers ready to fulfill orders. We’re in the final stages of testing our incense to make sure they are stable to deliver the blends of 1000 year old with every incense. Now we just need 5,000 USD to get our first production run going and make this available to the world.
